Ecotrust Award Nomination Letter template

Using the template is not required; it is here as an assistance tool. Again, you may call the program and request assistance in writing this letter. The Nomination Letter template is available in three formats: a Word document, a text file and an online template.

Online Template

An advantage of the online template is that the nominator does not need e-mail to submit the Nomination Letter. The information the nominator writes and submits will be received by Liz Woody automatically. Liz will review the nomination and contact the nominator. Then they may review the nomination together.

Please explain the individual's role within his/her community, and his/her ability to work with diverse interests to achieve balanced, pragmatic solutions to environmental, social, or economic challenges. Please keep to 5 pages, devoting at least half to his/her accomplishments. It is to your advantage to follow the template as a means of increasing understanding of the nominee's application. Provide concrete examples of work and achievement. Assume the reading panel does not know your specific region or issues, so be thorough in giving examples or definitions in some cases.

Dear Reading Panel and Jury:

Part I

Describe the type of relationship and length of your personal knowledge of this individual's work and dedication of the individual. (one half page)

Part II

What is the organization that the individual has worked through, and in what capacity?

Part III

How has the individual's work improved social, political, economic, and/or environmental conditions?

Part IV

How has this individual provided opportunity and inspiration for Indigenous peoples? Below are some examples to which you may respond. Please don't feel obligated to respond to all of the examples or limit answers only to the examples if there are more.

  • How does this person combine his/her traditional knowledge with a contemporary reality in accepting the responsibilities of serving his/her community, civic service, and environment?
  • How does this person connect Indigenous and non-Indigenous regional and national leadership?
  • Explain why this person possesses a global perspective resulting from the experience of exchange, dialogue, and negotiation with a variety of peoples.
  • How does this person make positive contributions to the world through service to communities, and if he or she cultivates new leadership in the process?
  • Does this person affirm traditional values and knowledge of the systems in the natural environment?
  • As a result of his or her actions, how are the preceding and following generations of knowledge and experiences strengthened and continued?
  • Here is additional space if you would like to write further how this individual provided opportunity and inspiration for Indigenous peoples.

Part V

What can the individual use the award for? Describe the general intentions, if nominee states a need. This may be critical in the final decision by the final review panel.
