Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Initiative
Fisheries Uses and Values Project
Outreach and Education
Outreach and education efforts that describe the specific purpose and intent of the project are crucial to obtaining buy-in from the fishing community, and allaying fears and concerns around the handling, use and analysis of data. Based on our previous experience in the other two regions, this is best done through meeting with key representatives from the fishing community (i.e. leaders of various fishing associations, members of the region stakeholder group, and harbor masters). We believe that a proactive approach to addressing this sensitive issue will minimize misinterpretation of the project and products later in the process.
- Meet with select fishing community members from the SCSR who have expressed interest in working together and understand the value of the exercise to solicit their suggestions and ideas for improving the project.
- Identify key individuals from the different fishing fleets of interest [to be identified with CDFG staff].
- Hold meetings with SCSR fishing groups and partners to discuss and clarify what data is being collected, why it is being collected, and how it will be used in the MLPA process.
- Distribute documents that clearly describe the purpose of the project, including: the consent form each fisherman will be asked to sign before their data can be used and, our protocol for handling and aggregating data.
