Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Initiative

Fisheries Uses and Values Project

When Can the Data be Used by the Stakeholder

One of the main goals of this project is to get the data (fishing grounds) in the hands of the stakeholders in a timely manner so they can use it to inform their process of siting MPA network alternatives. In both the NCCSR and the SCCSR processes this was not fully achieved until after the stakeholder groups began drawing lines on a map (we were a lot more successful in achieving this in the NCCSR). This was largely due to the fact that the studies began well after the stakeholder process started and the limited amount of time to complete projects of this magnitude. To try and avoid this problem in the South Coast, we have the proposed scope is being submitted well in advance of the commencement of the next process.

Once field work commences, we estimate that it will take 3–4 months to get a set of draft datasets to the regional stakeholder group. As field work is being conducted, those estimates could be adjusted to reflect the response rates we observe related to fishing season conflicts. If everything is on course, final data products would be delivered in time for the first set of South Coast Regional Stakeholder meetings and incorporation into the SCSR regional profile.

We anticipate that the field work will begin in May, although we can start as soon as April and hope to have all of the interviews completed by July. After the data has been reviewed by the participants and the fishing community, final data products will be delivered to the MLPA for use by the RSG pending any unforeseen problems. The start and end dates are flexible and will be adjusted to suite the SCSR timeline and the progress of the education and outreach efforts.
