Families Meet Their Meat
Portland buying club invests in a local ranch
Portland Green Parenting is a network of over 200 families who make bulk purchases from local farmers and food producers. Rebecca Andersson, the motor behind the food buying club, made a post to the FoodHub Marketplace in January, asking whether any ranches would be interested in starting a meat CSA for Green Parenting members.
Dustin and Lisalyn Taylor of Taylor Made Farms in Lebanon, Oregon, 20 miles due east of Corvallis, responded to Andersson’s post, and in June, Taylor Made Farms began delivering monthly meat CSA boxes to the network’s pick-up location for twelve families.
What does the meat CSA box entail? The Taylors raise hormone and antibiotic-free pork, chicken, lamb and beef on pasture, so all four meats are included. The CSA offers the farm the chance to sell not simply the very popular cuts (the t-bone, the chicken breast, the pork chop), but a diversity of edible cuts. At the same time, members become fully invested in the health of the small scale producer while also spreading their cooking wings.
The six-month meat CSA membership began this June. The Taylors have invited their twelve member families and their kids out to the ranch to visit and meet the animals. Meanwhile, the Portland Green Parenting network continues to make connections to food producers through FoodHub, engaging its membership continuously in building a vibrant and healthy local food economy.
