Farm to School in the Spotlight...

Join us this Friday for a City Club Lecture on school food

First, we want to say a huge “Thank you!” to those who voted for the farm to school policy championed by Ecotrust and others for a 2009 Wheelie Award. On Monday evening, dressed in our finest, we accepted the award for the “Best Campaign for the Public Good” from the Oregon Bus Project. We were very humbled to have been selected among many remarkable projects and look forward to working hard on behalf of Oregon’s kids and Oregon’s farmers come the next legislative session. Your votes definitely counted. Thank you!

Second, we invite you to join us this Friday during your lunch hour to learn more about local and national farm to school initiatives. The City Club of Portland is hosting a conversation with our very own Deborah Kane, Ecotrust Food & Farms Vice President, and Kristy Obbink, Director of Nutrition Services for the Portland Public Schools.

The two will discuss the historical context for the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program, efforts being made to improve school meals in Portland Public Schools, and parallel state and federal efforts to teach children where their food comes from and create opportunities for local farmers to provide their harvest to schools.

Please come with your pencils sharp and your notepads ready. We’re excited to share the details of our work with you.
