The winter issue of Edible Portland has arrived just in time. In this bitter cold, we need the good company of smart reading material while the oven warms the house and our food simmers slowly.

The cover story introduces the amazing young leaders at the reins of the Oregon FFA Association. Once known as Future Farmers of America, FFA goes far beyond farming to encompass programs that help students learn and experience all aspects of agriculture. You’ll strongly believe in the future of agriculture once you’ve finished this story.

On December 1, the Dungeness crab season opened in Oregon, and fishermen dropped their first baited pots into the water. This is the final crabbing season before Oregon’s first wave energy demonstrations begin just off the coast. Fishermen and wave energy technologists are grappling for the same ocean tracts, while also learning how to compromise and communicate. The Motion of the Ocean describes Oregon’s ocean planning process.

Look for local chestnuts — sometimes still in their green, spiky husks — while shopping at farmers’ markets this winter. Baked into breads, incorporated into soups, or just roasted and enjoyed plain, chestnuts are one of the holidays’ healthiest and tastiest indulgences. Read about how chestnuts are making a comeback in Oregon here.
