The creation of this map was inspired by the 1985 map by Wayne and Cameron Suttles entitled Native Languages of the Northwest Coast. Wayne Suttles wrote, "Because we usually see maps with north at the top and south at the bottom, we forget that north is not really 'up' and south 'down' but rather that up is really upstream, away from the sea, and down is really downstream, toward the sea.

"It was this way for the native peoples of the coast, who gave directions and locations by reference to the flow of water rather than by terms for cardinal directions."
For simplicity of design and speed of download, this map does not include river networks, but maintains the perspective that up represents upriver.
